Between the second and third album tours, January 1975 to January 1976, the smoking guitar was born, and it was pure low-tech. The Spaceman had one guitar, the one with the star-shaped decal, and a smoke bomb went into the potentiometer cavity in the back with the wick hanging out to be lit with a match. The first tries gummed up the controls, so the rig got re-engineered, and later a white-hot light went in behind it. The Smoking Guitar retro band tee is for everyone who ever believed the instrument was the special effect.
